text~Famous objects made with sterling silver.

Here are just a few we have picked, all with a prestigious connection........

The Queen's Silver Jubilee a special 25-pence coin
Commemorative souvenirs have been a popular way of marking Royal events such as Jubilees for the last three centuries. For The Queen's Silver Jubilee a special 25-pence coin was issued, designed by Andrew Machin. On the obverse it shows The Queen on horseback, and on the reverse, the coronation ampulla and anointing spoon with a floral decoration around. A total of 473,000 of these coins were issued in sterling silver; a further 37,453,000 were issued in copper-nickel.

1994 commonwealth games baton
The Queen's Baton is as much a part of the Commonwealth Games tradition as the torch is part of the Olympics. Traditionally, The Baton, used to open the Commonwealth games, begins its journey on Commonwealth Day, leaving England from Buckingham Palace and travelling around the Commonwealth before returning to the host nation. For the 1994 games, held in Victoria, British Columbia, the Baton was fashioned from sterling silver and was engraved with traditional symbols of the creative artists' families and cultures, including a wolf, a raven and an eagle with a frog in its mouth.

2002 commonwealth games baton
In 2002 at Manchester, on either side of the Baton are two sterling silver coins, designed by Mappin and Webb, which celebrate the City of Manchester as host of the XVII Commonwealth Games.

Ark Royal's Silver Bell
Immediately after the sinking of Ark Royal III in 1941, a meeting of the Canteen Committee was held in a street in Gibraltar Dockyard to decide upon the disposal of the balance remaining in the Ship's fund. They decided to spend about £500, which in effect belonged solely to the ratings of the Ship's Company, on the purchase of a silver bell. Not only was the bell to be engraved with the names of the three Captains from 1939 – 1941 and of the principle operations on which the ship had been engaged, but it was to be bequeathed to the next Ark Royal, so sure were they that Her name would not be forgotten. The Bell itself contains 3495 Troy ounces of sterling silver (about 100kg) and was tuned on the firm's own 5 tone harmonic principles. The clapper consists of a wrought iron shank with a silver nickel ball, which should not be left in contact with the Bell after striking, so as to avoid the risk of fracturing the Bell.

And the list goes on , however, we will stop here for now!
